Try not to let the blades touch the water (difficult: refer to the Balance section). If they do, you can hear the splash and see the ripples.
With your weight on your feet, relax, and enjoy the run of the boat through the water.
Look down sometimes to check your back is leaning forward at about 20-25 degrees from the vertical.
Get a good length of stroke by feeling your seat tucking under your body, not by leaning forward any further.
Look down sometimes to see that your shins reach the vertical at the beginning.
Square the blades by rolling the handles between palm and fingers, not by wrist action. Scullers with small hands may have to use some wrist action as well, dropping the wrists during the recovery, but the wrists must be flat when you pull.
As you reach for the beginning, feel your shoulders stretching towards the stern, but relaxed. This gives extra length: you will use the shoulders later.
The left hand should be a hand's breadth nearer the stern than the right to prevent scratching your knuckles later in the stroke.
